Goho Turns Two

How to Celebrate a Birthday During Lockdown

21st March 2021 is Spring equinox, Census day, and most importantly, it's Goho’s birthday.

On one hand, It doesn’t feel like 2 years since I incorporated Girl on Her Own Ltd. On the other hand, it feels like an eternity ago. It was back when we worked in an open plan office with free-flowing prosecco when 1Rebel classes were squeezed in every lunch, and almost every night was finished off in the pub. A time when we flew across the pond to conferences in NYC, got helicoptered over to Monaco and when 85% of our revenue came from Live Events. It wasn’t an eternity ago, it was 2019.

Fast forward two years and I’ve pivoted my business, grown from a team of 2 to a team of 8 (and we’re still recruiting), we’re no longer Girl on Her Own, but Goho Ltd, and my team are bloody brilliant. Yes, they’re almost all women, but we are all different ages, and from different backgrounds, education and experience.

Over 20% of new businesses fail in their first year, and a staggering 60% fail by year 3, so… while I’m not quite out of the woods, I kinda feel like if we can survive covid, we can survive anything.

We could celebrate by throwing one of our unique virtual events, a team-building day, or having an Instagram live party like we did last year. But I’ve decided instead to just say thank you.

Thank you to my family and friends who have put up with my constant whinging about the (lack of) government support, and for always believing in me. Thank you to my amazing team, the last year has been a tough one, but your hard work and loyalty are paying off hugely, all of you always go above and beyond, and nothing is ever a chore for you, words can’t say how much I appreciate you all. Liv, Roxy, thank you for making the effort to juggle work and homeschooling/nursery, I know how hard it must have been. And lastly, thank you to all our clients, thank you for giving us a chance, thank you for sticking with us, and thank you for your business, we wouldn’t have survived without you.

So here it is, at the dawn of a new financial year, our third year of being, and normality dawning on the horizon - My pledge is we will be in the 40% of businesses that survive, I will keep investing in my people, with training, learning, team-building, coaching and mentoring, We will keep growing, both in terms of clients and personnel, we will stand up for what we believe in, working with clients that fit our values, and ensure our workforce is representative of those values, we will keep pushing ourselves, and all without losing the essence of what makes us Goho. I started this business because I saw a gap in the market for a fresh, exciting and innovative approach to media and communications. I realised there was a way of giving businesses quality marketing support at affordable prices, ensuring they had excellent customer service and great results. I set out on a mission to change things, and it is happening slowly, we’re on a journey, but we’re getting there.

Thank you.
