Mel in Switzerland for M&I Davos
Before the wheels even hit the tarmac I was in awe of Switzerland, looking out of my window seat down at the greenery and snowy peaks - I knew I was in for something special.
They say it’s not about the destination but the journey, and after a coach, plane ride, three trains and a bus transfer, I would like a word with “they”.
Reaching Davos itself felt like an expedition, but at 1560 metres above sea level, you realise the climb is worth every step.
We were hosted by the stunning AlpenGold Hotel, set at the edge of the forest, with sweeping views of Davos, best viewed from the massive balcony - glass in hand.
But this wasn’t just a mountain getaway - during my 4 days in Davos, I had 40 meetings with hoteliers and venues from all over the globe. A melting pot of cultures, mixed with business speed-dating for building connections and creating lasting relationships.
Night two was straight out of a postcard: a funicular ride to Schatzalp Hotel with incredible views of Albula Alps. At 1860 metres above sea level, we were greeted with horn players and yodelers to really immerse ourselves in Swiss culture. We also tried the hotel's own grown cherry liqueur - a beautifully festive (and dangerous) drink when enjoyed with rootbeer and a slice.
In between back-to-back meetings we managed to squeeze in some Swiss soul, by visiting the pint-sized village of Monstein. 200 inhabitants strong, sitting 1620 metres above sea level. Picture wooden chalets, alpine air, vegetable gardens, 10 village fountains, two churches and history oozing from every beam.
Guided by Maya from Davos Services, we wandered through tales of folklore, superstition and heritage, before touring the Monstein Brewery, the highest altitude brewery in all of Europe! The owner, Basti, walked us through their craft, from rich grains to golden pours, clinking steins and toasting to mountain living.
I will never forgive my London commute, I would choose the alps over the East Anglian flats anyday! It was a once in a lifetime experience, invaluable connections and relationships built at the top of mountains, that will last longer than the cherry liqueur hangover.
